Josep Borrell, EU High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the European Commission recently visited Georgia, country which wants to be a part of European Union. The main reason why Borrell visited Georgia was connected to meeting Georgian officials and giving major recommendations in terms of EU.
According to him Georgia has a great opportunity which needs to be utilized-,, no doubt Georgia belongs to European family’’, he talked about the importance of eliminating political tension, as well as completing all the twelve recommendations given by commission. Borrell underscored the fact that three of the recommendations are delivered, albeit other nine need to be done, as he adds he and European Union want Georgia to succeed on its European path.
EU high representative also met the prime minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili, politicians met to discuss Georgian journey and remarks concerning the membership. Prime minister of Georgia spoke about the great amount of work ruling party has done, Garibashvili mentioned in his speech that Georgia showed a huge will to be a part of European family, that the government provided fully transparent and inclusive process, they invited every political party to be a part of this complex process.
Prime minister accused opposition to reject participation in some aspects as well as sabotage and destruction. Borell on the other hand said that he had some main messages. Firstly he again mentioned that Georgia belongs to Europe, he said he wanted to deliver this message for the Georgian people by himself, he adds that he is fascinated by the percentage of Georgians who support euro-integration (80%) and mentioned huge amount of EU flags that he saw during his visit to Georgia.
He mentioned how vital it is for government and opposition to cooperate and work together, in order to decrease political tension and to save this very important chance, the result will be achieved on the basis of the combined force.
He also mentioned that even though Georgia still has nine recommendation left, there is still time to complete all the recommendations, as there is a lot of work to do, but it will all be worth it in the end, not only to become a member of the EU but also to improve daily life of the population. Lately Georgian government has worked on an impeachment of Georgian president Salome Zourabichvili, and Josep suggested not doing so as it increases polarization and tension, as institutions should work together.
